Controlling Room EnvironmentsAVTECH’s TemPageR Helps Companies Monitor Temperatures In Data Centers

By Frederick Nevin - Processor - Vol.27 Issue 14
One of the worst nightmares a company can face is damage to its data center. While many conditions can cause this, the room's environment is often at fault for being too hot or too cold for the equipment. The results are costly repair bills and a virtual shutdown of the company's ability to do business. Fortunately, this doesn't have to happen. Companies can avoid equipment damage by installing a temperature-monitoring device that issues early warnings when the room is too hot or cold.

One of the newest products in this category is TemPageR from AVTECH Software. TemPageR is a hardware-software system that monitors temperature conditions, be it in a data center, hospital operating room, laboratory, or other facility where maintaining a specific temperature is critical. The product can be used with or without a PC.

The product's flexibility makes it usable in many applications, says Michael Sigourney, senior product specialist. "It's basic insurance."

TemPageR features digital sensors that provide actual temperature when an alert is issued. This way, the user knows they not only have a problem, but also where the problem is, says Sigourney.

The sensor monitors temperature every two seconds, and data is given in Fahrenheit or Celsius. Unlimited alerts can be delivered to individuals or groups, and certain individuals can be notified at different temperature thresholds. Alerts can be sent to mobile phones, PDAs, and email. Alert messages can be customized and incorporate keywords for real-time temperatures, date, time, and other live information.

Besides temperature monitoring, it can export temperature data with one click to Excel. Data can also be graphed for understanding of trends, as well as reporting of current high and low temperature.

The TemPageR package includes an ID box for one to four digital temperature sensors as far as 900 feet away. Additional sensors can be connected to three standard phone jacks on the front of the box. A TemPageR software application is also available to monitor up to 25 ID boxes on the network. It runs on any Windows system.

The package also comes with an Ethernet connection and 10-foot cable, a built-in digital temperature sensor, a standard external digital temperature sensor with 25-foot RJ-11 cable, CD installation and resource media, web server guide, and 12 months of maintenance support and update services.

TemPageR is not the only temperature sensing unit on the market. There are many competing products, including IT Watchdog's WXGOOS1 monitor, Microtechnologies' Temperature Guard VM500-3 computer room guard, and Network Technologies' Server Environment Monitoring System.
