A Heads-UpSystem Warns Of Impending Computer Disasters

Written By Christine McCall - Newport Daily News - Weekend Edition
Michael Sigourney Speak's To Us About AVTECH SoftwareNewport - Imagine that the building where your company is located is severely damaged by a flood or fire. Now imagine that the building has hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment and systems inside. Chances are the system is facing a long road to recovery.

AVTECH Software Inc. of Newport, however, has products that make it possible to head off such a disaster.

The Third Street company's systems monitor environmental conditions in data centers for companies large and small. One of AVTECH's newest products is the Room Alert 26W, which was recently selected to provide services to the United Nations Mission In Liberia. Room Alert 26W will be deployed to more than 40 data centers throughout Liberia and surrounding African nations to monitor temperature, humidity, heat index, power, flood, room-entry conditions and more.

Michael Sigourney, Sr Product Specialist at AVTECH Software, has been with the computer and software company since it started in 1988. "Our products try to keep an eye on environmental conditions," he said.

The United Nations already was using AVTEH products at headquarters in New York City and other locations around the world. The Room Alert 26W software installed in Africa will monitor environmental conditions in data centers, as well as provide alerting, data logging and automatic corrective actions. The software protects expensive equipment, maximizes performance of data centers, improves support response time and reduces downtime, according to Sigourney.

The product allows customers to respond immediately to a problem, he said. What makes this product even more advanced is that it uses wireless technology, Sigourney said.

The inside of a Room Alert box is like a circuit board. It is able to connect with several types of sensors - digital temperature, humidity, main power, flood, smoke, sound, light and entry, among others - which connect to the back of the box. When a problem is detected in a data center or computer room, the sensors connected to the Room Alert software send a signal to business owners or employees by telephone, mobile phone, page, e-mail and other devices.

"We're providing an ability to stay informed and react faster," Sigourney said. There also is an option that shuts down the most expensive equipment in an office before it is destroyed, he said.

The Room Alert 26W costs $1,195, and other Room Alert variations range in price from $395-$895. One of AVTECH's original products was the TemPageR, which monitors temperature. The TemPageR sells for $245. Sigourney said temperature is the No. 1 thing that brings down data centers.

"We allow people to know immediately before data centers go down," Sigourney said.

AVTECH monitors major data centers for the government and provides software for the White House, the Pentagon, all branches of the U.S. military and more than 80 percent of the Fortune 1,000 companies and organizations of all sizes worldwide, he said. A few well-known companies AVTECH provides software to include UPS, Harley Davidson, Amazon.com and Marriott.

Some Rhode Island companies AVTECH serves include Raytheon, GTECH and the Department of Education.

Sigourney said most companies that purchase AVTECH software start with smaller, less-expensive units to monitor their offices and data centers. But 64 percent of those customers come back within the first year to upgrade, he said.

AVTECH products are used in 104 countries and the company is looking to expand in the near future. With growth and more development in mind, AVTECH is hoping to move its offices and resources to the vacant Sheffield School, which the city will soon put on the market.
